No more AAA batteries in the candlesticks.
Battery candles are handy right up until the batteries need changing. Two little batteries per candle, and there's always one candle that dies before the rest.
With Vela, you recharge instead. Pop all six candles in the charging base and plug in the USB-C cable. After about two hours they're good to go again, and one charge lasts around 70 hours, according to the manufacturer.
Candles in the candlesticks — even with a cat in the house.
Plenty of cat owners have given up lighting candles. One swish of a tail over a flame is all it takes, and nobody wants to leave the candelabra lit while they nip into the kitchen.
Vela has no flame. The tip is an LED shaped like a flame, so the candelabra can stay lit on the sideboard even when the cat wanders past.
Switch them on and off without getting up.
On ordinary battery candles, the switch is underneath. So every candle has to be lifted out of its holder to turn it off — six times, every evening.
Vela comes with a remote control. Switch them on and off from the sofa, or press the timer — 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours — and the candles go off by themselves once you've gone to bed.
The Christmas present for anyone who always has candles in the window.
For Mum, Gran or the neighbour who puts a candle in every candlestick come December — and sometimes forgets to blow them out.
Six taper candles, a charging base and a remote control in one set. The timer switches them off if nobody else does.

no more batteries
I had cheap battery candles in the candelabra before and was forever changing the batteries. Now I just pop them on the base on a Sunday and that's that.
the cats and the candelabra
We've got two cats and haven't had candles lit for years. The candelabra on the sideboard is lit again and nobody has to keep an eye on it.
no wax on the tablecloth
Sat on the Christmas table without a single drip. The tablecloth survived for the first time in ages.
measure your candlesticks first
A bit loose in my nan's old brass candlesticks. Put a candle collar round the base and now they stand up straight. They fit fine in the newer ones.
in the windows
Three in the kitchen window and three in the living room. They look lovely in the windows, which neither of us ever dared do with real candles.
the remote
I used to have to lift every candle out to switch it off. Now I do it from the sofa. Sounds like a small thing, but I do it every evening.
for my mum
Bought these for my mum, who always has candles in the window in December and sometimes forgets to blow them out. Timer on four hours and job done.
not dimmable
Lovely warm glow. Would have liked to turn them down a bit in the evening, but it does say they can't be dimmed.
the base needs a socket
Good candles. Only downside is the charging base has to be near a plug socket, so it ended up moving to the hallway.
six goes a long way
Six candles is enough for the candelabra plus two more candlesticks. The base lives in the hallway and takes up hardly any room.
look like the real thing
From the sofa they look just like ordinary candles. Up close you can tell the tip is an LED, but it doesn't bother me.
